This Order amends the Welfare of Animals (Transport) Order 1997 (S.I. 1997/1480 as amended by S.I. 1998/2537). It makes provision for the enforcement of Council Regulation (EC) No. 411/98 (“the Regulation”) on additional animal protection standards applicable to road vehicles used for the carriage of livestock on journeys exceeding eight hours (OJ No. L52, 21.2.98, p. 8). The Order makes it an offence against the Animal Health Act 1981 for any person to use a road vehicle for the transportation of animals in contravention of the Regulation.
